Hand knit sweaters serve as a great benchmark for marking the growth of a baby. Last August I knit the Peapod sweater for our baby on the way. I proudly dressed her in it to bring her home from the hospital in the beginning of December, despite the fact that she swam in it. Now, four months later, this sweater fits her perfectly and has for the last month. It’s hard to believe that she’s already growing out of it, something I don’t really want her to do. I love the design of this sweater, I love the yarn, I love the color, and I love the memories I have while I was knitting this sweater and dreaming about my future baby. But even more, I love the beautiful, energetic, happy little baby that models this sweater so beautifully. She’s grown up so much in the past 4 months – she’s so close to rolling over on her own, she’s talking up a storm, and she’s very social – and I’m already proud of the person she is becoming. I guess I’m going to have to get used to the fact that she’ll continue to grow at warp speed and relish the fact that I can knit perfect little sweaters for her to wear at all of the different stages in her life. And, perhaps someday, she’ll bring her child home from the hospital in this sweater that I lovingly knit for her…a mama can dream!
